SGA to Start Using "Pokémon: GO to the Polls" for Elections
Biola SGA will be implementing Pokémon: GO to the polls this coming spring. The announcement comes on the heels of Hillary Clinton’s use of the phrase “Pokémon Go to the polls” at one of her rallies. The SGA and SPA staff want to become more relevant to the student body.
“You know, we have seen how Pokémon: GO has had an impact on the student body. Lots of students have played the popular cell phone game and we want to capitalize as best as we can to get students excited about voting. We know that voter interest is at an all time low, and we want to change that,” said Junior SGA member Michael Christian.
The plan is to have the app available in time for Punk n’ Pie as a way for students to vote for their favorite act.
“Punk n' Pie is the perfect place to test out the new system. It's really all trial and error; we need to make sure we have the best product come March,” stated app developer Winston Carmex.
While there is excitement buzzing about the Twitter sphere, some students have shown some reluctancy.
Sophomore Journalism major Genevieve Jacobson had some thoughts, “I just don’t get it. It really just seems like a voting app. Why call it Pokémon: GO to the polls? I am fed up with our student government association because it just doesn’t make sense. I wish they would spend their time working on things that the students care about like chapel reductions.”
“Actually, we are working on Pokémon: GO to chapel for a launch of next year. We tried to do Pokémon: GO to Torrey Conference but we just had no time,” said Christian in rebuttal.
